A security researcher says a flaw in Microsoft’s internal Titan analytics service let him gain administrator access and run database queries without valid credentials. According to the report, Titan accepted unsigned JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) and resolved a forged local username of "admin" to local user ID 1, enabling unauthorized SQL execution through a public-facing API path on an Azure Cloud Services host. Microsoft says it hardened the service after the disclosure; no CVE is mentioned.
Why it matters: This matters because a basic authentication mistake at a major vendor reportedly exposed highly sensitive internal data structures and access to analytics databases at massive scale. Defenders should review JWT signature validation in their own services and watch for similar auth-bypass conditions, especially on internal APIs exposed through cloud endpoints.
