Researchers demonstrated a new attack that can interfere with industrial control traffic even when it is protected by a virtual private network. The proof-of-concept, called ICS-Sniper, targets cloud-hosted supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) environments by analyzing encrypted packet size, timing, and direction to predict critical control moments, then dropping payload-carrying packets in transit. Tests on the SWaT water-treatment testbed delayed pump startup by about 15 minutes and kept a valve open for more than nine extra minutes.
Why it matters: This matters to utilities and other industrial operators moving control systems into cloud-connected architectures: encrypted traffic alone may not stop disruption if attackers can control network-path devices. Defenders should review routing trust, redundancy, and monitoring around operational technology links and cloud-SCADA deployments.
