UK government rolls out passkey sign-ins to 23 million GOV.UK One Login users

The UK government is expanding passkey login support across GOV.UK One Login, giving more than 23 million users the option to sign in without a password. After a 300,000-user trial, people can now use a fingerprint, Face ID, or device PIN instead of a password plus SMS two-factor authentication code; the government says nearly 10 percent of daily logins already use passkeys and that biometric data stays on the user’s device.
Why it matters: This matters because GOV.UK accounts cover tax, pension, and other sensitive public services, and passkeys are designed to sharply reduce phishing and account-takeover risk. Affected users should expect passkeys to become a recommended sign-in option and should enable them where available if they use GOV.UK One Login.
